Future Music

Music has long been an Industry capable of turning over millions of pounds profits for the majors player (EMI, SONY BMG, Warner) in the scene. These major player control and decide what music we should like, when in reality, most of us hate the music which is referred to as “pop music”, short for popular music. Many people detest the excuse for music that gets played on the radio although there is a high percentage on people that dont actually realise there is more to music that “pop”.

Underground genres are on the rise, all it takes is for the people to make a stand. Stop buying the music that we are spoon fed and support the people who are trying to make a difference and develop new age, real popular music for the world.

Downloading has obviously had a vigorous effect on the availability of music and although the general consensus would state that file sharing is bad for the industry, I personally think that the readily available vast collection of music that is available to us all can encourage us to listen to music we would previously have left alone. As a result of this I now have much broader horizons and have visited at least 10 concerts this year that I definatley wouldn’t have if their music wasn’t available for me to check it out. At many of these concerts I have purchased memorabilia and music either on vinyl or CD and I would like to think that many people still do, in support of the cause.

So… I think people should download freely as long as they are willing to support the cause so that real musicians don’t die out simply because its no longer worth it to them, in saying that true musician can’t die out because they are in it for the passion of music, not for the greed of material possessions.

Music Protection AKA DRM – Where are we going with this??

So… What does the music world have store for us in the near and distant future? With the ever increasing rise in availability of access to broadband Internet, the sales of music CD,s is falling dramatically each year, online sales are increasing but not nearly enough to match the loss.

Some people think that the rise in downloadable, easily transferable media is actually beneficial to the music industry because it allows people to access music they would previously have left on the shelf in the record store. If people hear something they lik eit could encourage them to attend a concert or even by the CD or full quality download from ITunes.

The major problem seems to be that companies such as Apple, Sony and Microsoft have developed their own versions of protection for their music which is only playable using the correct software or device. This seems to be a good way to segregate the music industry leaving music lovers with the difficult choice of which to choose, bearing in mind that once that decision isd made then a digital music collection is limited to use on specific player.

Apple announced last year that they would be offering unprotected music from their Itunes store at a higher cost. This type of media is compatible with any device/software which is capable of playing MP3. This seems to be the way forward but still has not introduced one year later.
